PAM GOODE & JEAN CAUTHEN
COLOR & TEXTURE IN ORVIETO
FOCUS ON TEXTURE OR COLOR IN ORVIETO!
Jean is known for her humor and spirited approach to painting the landscape. Work on several small surfaces in a class format that combines group instruction, short demos and individual attention. With a limited palette of colors, students learn to capture the terra cotta colors and the simple rustic forms of the village and countryside of Orvieto! Plein-air is a wonderful way, using nature as your reference, to grow as a painter and achieve confidence no matter your usual subject matter.
DATES: May 19 – 25, 2019
PRICE: $3495 USD
THEME: Create postcard-sized mosaics or small surface plein air paintings when you infuse your work with a sense of your own personal response to your environment.
Meet Pam and Jean

Pam Goode
Known for her sense of whimsy and color, Pam Goode’s mosaics transcend the subject at hand and go straight for the heart. “My goal is to bring a sense of joy, wonder, or peace to viewers. The image has to resonate — there’s no alternative.”
An avid traveler, Pam is most inspired by being in unfamiliar surroundings where every sight, every thought, is new. “I see everything differently — feel everything differently –and the ability to communicate my own transformation though art thrills me. In Italy, transformation is easy. There isn’t a more joyous country on earth, from the people to the food, the art, the landscape and the brilliant blue skies. Everyone wants to be in Italy, and why wouldn’t they? The only thing better is making art in Italy.”
Pam is an internationally recognized mosaic artist based in Charlotte, NC who made her first mosaic in 1999 and never stopped. As a creator of fine art, installations, and community projects, she works with a variety of materials, including Italian and Mexican handmade glass, stained glass, porcelain, stone, and found objects.
Jean Cauthen
Jean will tell you that growing up in Naples, Italy, New Orleans and the Carolinas inspired a lifelong wanderlust as well as a search for the perfect travel bag. Along with a passion for travel, Jean brings a love of painting, teaching and an attitude of positivity and humor to every art adventure.
Unexpected color relationships, complex design have been the hallmark of her large abstract paintings based on forms in nature and architecture. Her plein-air work inspires these color and design choices. It is this painting on location that takes Jean to Ireland, France, Costa Rico and (her favorite!) Italy.
Jean’s work was recently featured in Outdoor Painter Magazine. https://www.outdoorpainter.com/putting-design-over-subject/
Jean holds an MFA in painting, exhibits internationally, conducts Art History lectures, has worked in healing arts and never misses a chance to “meet the locals.”
Although she has over 20 years of conducting travel adventures she still can’t really read a map and contends most good stories start with, “I had to ask for directions….”

Your time with Pam and Jean includes:
Lichen-covered stone, nubby lemons with deep green leaves, gnarled cherry branches and prickly cedar, sun-dried laundry, the translucent petals of vermillion geraniums — Orvieto is amok with texture and inspiration.
Register to spend this glorious week either doing Mosaics with Pam or Painting with Jean. Each day will be composed of a lesson on technique, a suggested exercise, and time to work on your own, as well as ample time to explore Orvieto for inspiration.
With Pam, you’ll learn how to convert photographs to mosaic designs with phone software (no drawing!), see mosaic techniques used for different effects, learn to bring light and energy to your work, and learn how to choose appropriate materials to bring an image to life.
With Jean, build upon concepts like ‘how to plan a painting,’ ‘creating patterns of value’ and ‘ achieving color harmony’ while working on your pieces.
Bonus fun: Register to spend this glorious week either doing Mosaics with Pam or Painting with Jean. As an added benefit and as time permits, Jean and Pam, who have enjoyed many travel and art adventures, will share their expertise with both groups. For example, all participants may create a small mosaic pendant with Pam, or join in impromptu discussions on color, travel and art with Jean. Bring your smart phones on a stroll as you explore Orvieto “Near and Far,” a walking tour of possible subject matter.
