Kate is returning to Orvieto to teach September 9-15, 2018.  Read on to learn a little bit more about her and her workshop.

What are you most excited about in returning to Orvieto?

I can’t wait to see The Cathedral of Orvieto and the Final Judgment fresco by Luca Signorelli. Of all of the cathedrals I saw, this one was by far my favorite and so personal since I have been studying Signorelli’s art for several years now.

What’s your fondest memory of your last trip?

My fondest memory of my last trip was working in the studio with my students. I remember just being in the studio with them and slowing down to absorb the beauty around me, the beauty of art the students were making. I wanted to take it all in and I did!

What do you hope your students will take away from your class?

What I hope my students will take away from my class is a better understanding of Luca Signorelli masterpiece. The book we are making we will use to document our time there using mandalas with different themes. We will stitch and paint in our books using a variety of unconventional techniques. Painting on fabric and adding plaster to create a new Heirloom they will have forever.

What is it about Orvieto that’s so special?

I love all the winding streets full of beautiful people taking their time to enjoy life. You can go at a slower pace unlike some of the big cities , but still have so much to see and do. You never know what you are going to find around the corner. Another piazza you have never seen before. I also love going down to the caves which overlap and intersect under all of Orvieto. So fascinating.

How do you incorporate Orvieto/Italy in your teaching this week?

The frescos in Orvieto are full inspiration and with that in mind we will be creating our own fresco painting using plaster and dry pigment in our books.

What are you most excited to share with your students?

I want them to walk away with a beautiful book personal to them. I also can’t wait to give them a pair of beautiful handmade wings I have made and will teach them to make. I want them to have a new heirloom they can have throughout their life that will always remind them of their time in Orvieto.

What cultural experience do you enjoy most?

I have to say the museums throughout all of Italy as well as the beautiful cathedrals which hold so much beauty and history. In Orvieto specifically I love the caves.

Do you have a favorite spot to people watch?

Absolutely, the Blue Bar!

What’s your favorite flavor of gelato?
