What are you most excited about in returning to Orvieto?
Orvieto is my home away from home and I’m always thrilled to be returning. I love the people, the food, and the views. There is a very special energy of inspiration there and I can’t wait to jump back into the creative flow.
What’s your fondest memory of your last trip there?
Last year, one beautiful evening, we sat outside Blue Bar enjoying some local wine. The owner, Anthony, joined us with his acoustic guitar and we laughed and sang songs until it was time for him to go home to his family. It’s things like this that make you feel part of the community.
What do you hope your students will take away from your class? What is it about teaching in Orvieto that’s so special?
I hope students take away a strong foundation in expressing their own voices. My goal is that they leave with a piece (or pieces) that help them get their point of view and their experiences out in the world. I’ve taught in several places in Italy and Orvieto has a way of casting a spell on creatives that really gets them going.
What cultural experience do you enjoy most?
Every morning I go for a walk around the cliffs of town. It’s stunning to be immersed in those views. Then I return to the convent as the town is waking up for the day. I love to walk through as shop keepers are opening their doors, kids are rushing to school, people are having their coffee, and the day is starting. It’s small moments like those I find most inspiring.
Do you have a favorite spot to people watch?
You can’t really beat the piazza of the Duomo. It’s wonderful to sit there, watch people stream through, and be wowed by the duomo itself. I love seeing someone come around a corner and catch their first glimpse. Their faces are always full of wonder.
What’s your favorite flavor of gelato?
This is definitely the hardest question to answer. My favorite could be La Musa, which is the signature flavor at my favorite gelato shop: La Musa, run by a mother/daughter team. It’s strange blend of ricotta, sambuca, dark chocolate, and cinnamon. I love it!
