LYNN SCHMITT & RENEE NANNEMAN

POSTCARDS FROM ITALY

MEMORIES IN COLOR AND TEXTURE.

A sewing experience set in the hills of Italy resplendent with mixed medium textiles and a focus on unique sewing and wool appliqué techniques. Class begins before arrival in Orvieto. Students will receive a core packet of fabrics with colors and textures inspired by the landscape of Italy. The color palette in cotton, batik, raw silk, Dupioni silk and home décor fabrics set the stage for a half-square triangle exchange. Each student will be asked to contribute fabrics to the palette mix. Individual interpretation of color will personalize each set of half-square triangles and add a touch of international friendship to everyone’s project. Half-square triangles in combination with beautifully rich background fabrics, provided by the teachers, is the structure on which you will build your design. The guidelines are simple – the possibilities are endless.

DATES: October 3-9, 2021

PRICE:  $3520 USD ( includes $25 Kit Fee)

THEME: Participants will be asked to contribute to the palette, and each will receive a core packet of fabrics. A bit of pre-trip sewing will jumpstart your design process. Once in Orvieto, Lynn and Renee will help you create your individual Postcards from Italy piece.

Meet Lynn and Renee

LYNN SCHMITT

Lynn has worked in a design capacity for all of her professional life. She entered the design world as a Fine Arts student ultimately graduating with a BFA in Interior Design. She then continued as an interior designer specializing in commercial interiors for over 30 years and now colors outside the lines as the owner of A Different Box of Crayons. Lynn has worked with and designed quilts for over 12 years. A Different Box of Crayons was officially launched in 2010. Through A Different Box of Crayons, Lynn designs patterns and kits for the adventurous quilter using new techniques and an eclectic mix of cotton and alternative textiles.

Lynn’s work has been published repeatedly in American Patchwork and Quilting and Quilts and More. She has had several projects published in Need’l Love quilt books. Initially her most popular projects focused on whimsical approaches to graphic imagery in quilts. Lynn’s current focus is on secondary patterning, color, textures and Eclectic textiles enhanced with wool appliqué. With a little understanding of how to handle and sew with Eclectic textiles, quilters need not be limited to just cotton fabric in their projects. Eclectic Bundles afford quilters access to silk matka, raw silk and silk dupioni, both hand dyed and woven wools, linen, home decor and certainly all scales and themes of cotton. Lynn illustrates here how they can by beautifully brought together to dance in a single project. Truly a new “box of crayons” for quilters of all ages and experience to learn to color with!

RENEE NANNEMAN

Renée Nanneman entered the needlework industry in 1984, a young designer with original patterns for counted cross-stitch; Need’l Love was born. Always a step ahead of current trends, Renée’s creative vision inspired her to move her independent publishing company from needlework into the quilting industry. Woodland Threads was published in 1995, the first-of-its-kind book, offering a mix of wool appliqué penny rug designs, fabric wallhangings, dolls & wearables patterns. Although the self-published books now include many quilt designs as well as rug hooking, punchneedle, crochet, needle felting, home decorating and soft craft items, the primary goal has always been to publish fresh and innovative designs that would inspire others to appreciate and enjoy quilting and the needlearts that Renée loves.

The commitment Renée made in 1995 to the needlearts is the cornerstone of Need’l Love’s success, and that success continues for Renée as a fabric designer. Renée partnered with Andover Fabrics in 2005 & designed “Daylily Days”, her first cotton fabric collection for quilting, inspired by an antique fabric covered keepsake chest. Renée has designed close to 50 quilting fabric collections for Andover Fabrics and continues to publish books and patterns to support her fabric designs.

Renée is currently celebrating her 35th year in business, having built on an early art education at the Kansas City Art Institute and work experience at a major printing company in Kansas City!
