Meet Sue

Southern Africa had a considerable influence on Sue’s life and creativity. She was born in Zambia and educated in South Africa, where she also trained to be a nurse. She soon moved to England. This shift between two very different environments and cultures has inspired many of her designs. The stark contrasts between the arid beige and browns of the African bushveld and the lush greens of the rolling hills of Southern England have continued to be a rich source of ideas. Sue is influenced especially by the energy and color of traditional African designs. All of these early experiences combined to stir her love of “primitive” arts and crafts and grew into her focus on contemporary folk-art. Throughout her early life, the United States beckoned and in 1989 that dream was fulfilled when she moved to Connecticut and subsequently to Tennessee, Utah and finally settling in Ohio. Each new State presented sharp contrasts and stirred new ideas. With each move Sue met many new and wonderful quilt enthusiasts and through them added abundantly to her knowledge and creativity. In Sue’s own words, “Quilt makers are special people and I thank them for their warmth and companionship.”

Your time with Sue includes:

Your project is the result of a collaboration with Federico Badia, a local leather craftsman, who will make accessories for a bag Sue has designed. It will incorporate a leather base and handles in either black or brown as well as an appliquéd piece inspired by your trip to Orvieto. The appliquéd piece can be made either as a 12” x 9” piece or as twelve 3” appliquéd squares. If you choose not to incorporate the piece into a bag you can work on a small pictorial appliqué piece instead.

As the piece is small you will not need to bring large quantities of supplies. In class you will focus on the front appliqué. Sue will bring a finished sample to share along with a pattern for each of you to complete the project at home.
