ANDREA MATUS &

MICHAEL deMENG

PARADISO E INFERNO

ETHEREAL ENVOYS AND TERRIBLE TROUBLEMAKER.

Orvieto, Italy is home to an amazing work of art called “the Damned” by Luca Signorelli. It is a fresco painting adorning the Chapel of San Brizio that depicts a battle between good and evil. Angels hover above while a slew of strange demons in all sorts of colors and shapes struggle for the souls of humankind. It’s a marvelous piece of art, so marvelous, in fact that it seemed like an excellent bit of inspiration for our time in Italy.

In this workshop students will explore the balance between the heavenly and the horrible in once piece of art. Students will create a found-object/painted/collaged shrine of Heaven and Hell. The frame will be created using the process of assemblage.  Michael will facilitate this portion of the workshop as students modify cradled wood panels into something fantastical using a plethora of found objects.  Andrea’s portion of the workshop will explore the two opposing realms using her techniques of paint and collage.

The really exciting part about this project is that piece will be totally reversible; sometimes the good guys are on top, sometime the bad guys…depending on the kind of day you’re having may determine how you display it.  Get ready for an epic artistic battle of the ages.

Meet andrea & Michael

Michael DeMeng and Andrea Matus - Paradiso E Inferno - May 13 to May 21 2022 - Adventures in Italy - Assemblage

Andrea Matus is a visual artist living in Vancouver BC who exhibits as well as teaches her unique combination of painting, collage, assemblage and sculpture throughout the world with collectors in Canada, USA, Europe and Australia. In her art, Andrea creates powerful visual statements of the role of women in both history and mythology. Through her culling of images from contemporary sources, historic iconography, travels and original designs, a sense of surreal worlds is evoked.

Michael deMeng is an assemblage artist from Vancouver, Canada who exhibits and teaches throughout the world. He has three books exploring his methods, Secrets of Rusty Things, Dusty Diablos, and the Art Abandonment Project, published by NorthLight Books. In his art, he addresses issues of transformation. Discarded materials find new and unexpected uses in his work; they are reassembled and conjoined with unlikely components, a form of rebirth from the ashes into new life and new meaning. Often using myth and legends as source material, Michael use his assemblages as metaphors for the evolutions and revolutions of existence: from life to death to rebirth. These forms are examinations of the world in perpetual flux, where meaning and function are ever-changing.
