Meet Lynn

Lynn has worked in a design capacity for all of her professional life. She entered the design world as a Fine Arts student ultimately graduating with a BFA in Interior Design. She then continued as an interior designer specializing in commercial interiors for over 30 years and now colors outside the lines as the owner of A Different Box of Crayons. Lynn has worked with and designed quilts for over 12 years. A Different Box of Crayons was officially launched in 2010. Through A Different Box of Crayons, Lynn designs patterns and kits for the adventurous quilter using new techniques and an eclectic mix of cotton and alternative textiles.
Lynn’s work has been published repeatedly in American Patchwork and Quilting and Quilts and More. She has had several projects published in Need’l Love quilt books. Initially her most popular projects focused on whimsical approaches to graphic imagery in quilts. Lynn’s current focus is on secondary patterning, color, textures and Eclectic textiles enhanced with wool appliqué. With a little understanding of how to handle and sew with Eclectic textiles, quilters need not be limited to just cotton fabric in their projects. Eclectic Bundles afford quilters access to silk matka, raw silk and silk dupioni, both hand dyed and woven wools, linen, home decor and certainly all scales and themes of cotton. Lynn illustrates here how they can by beautifully brought together to dance in a single project. Truly a new “box of crayons” for quilters of all ages and experience to learn to color with! Lynn is the author of The Art of Mixing Textiles in Quilts, a composite of 14 mixed medium projects several of which were inspired by the very same environment we will find ourselves in next Fall, beloved Orvieto.

Your time with Lynn includes:
The creativity begins to flow the very first day when we tour the magnificent Duomo and walk the streets of Orvieto together; camera, phone or sketch pad in hand. Architectural details have always spoken to Lynn. Your piece starts there too with traditional piecing inspired by the geometry of the Duomo. This element, the Duomo Blocks, will fittingly act as the backdrop for your piece. Within your project we will develop together, in either multiple or single vignettes, the more decorative or pictorial elements that call to you personally. Your piece may want a single focus element or need multiple elements within different vignettes. The choice will be yours. The project is modular and has many ways of being configured. Ultimately you can use it as a wallhanging, a table or bed runner, the front of a bag or a bolster. The fun actually starts before you leave home with Lynn guiding you through the concept and basic construction of her Duomo blocks. A kit will be sent to you with mixed textiles and the basic instructions on how to handle them. To get the repetitive parts taken care of and have a way to get to know each other a bit before you arrive, Lynn will conduct an introductory VIRTUAL CLASS on alternative textiles and the construction of your background / Duomo blocks. Learning the basic concepts of the mixed textiles before hand will leave you open to executing the detail of your work on site.
